JO ANN WALTERS is a photographic artist living and teaching in New England. She has been practicing photography since the middle 1980’s and has been described by seminal photographer William Eggleston as “one of the few independently original photographers working in the color today.” Her work is included in distinguished collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, St Louis Museum of Art, the Biblioteque Nationale, and the Center for Fine Photography, Bombay.She is compiling a book of portrait work titled: Vanity + Consolation with essay by Sandra Phillips, senior curator at SFMoMA and Professor Laura Wexler, from Yale University. Her current project is DOG TOWN comprised of rural and industrial sites made in small towns and villages throughout the Midwestern + Southern United States. She has been on the faculties of Yale University and Rhode Island School of Design. She is the Head of the Photography Board of Study at Purchase College, State University of New York.
